Confidential mental-health support for everyone affected by AI171

Grief after an aviation accident does not end when the news cycle does. This is a private, anonymous space for bereaved families, the survivor, witnesses, first responders, and the aviation community — to talk, to be heard, and to book time with a specialist, for as long as it takes.

About this programme

What we do

The AI171 Support Programme is an independent, not-for-profit service of the Safety Matters Foundation. We exist for one reason: to make sure that no one touched by this tragedy has to carry it alone. We offer a calm, confidential, anonymous place to talk — and, when you’re ready, to book private time with a trained mental-health specialist.

🕊️Listen first

Confidential first support and a human to talk to — anonymously, with no name, ID, or judgement, whenever you need it.

📅Connect you to care

Book a private 45-minute session with an approved psychologist or trauma specialist, in your language, at a time that suits you.

🌿Stay for the long road

Grief and trauma surface in their own time. We keep the door open indefinitely — through anniversaries, inquiries, and quiet days alike.

🛡️Protect your privacy

We ask only the minimum. You are never named, never tracked, and your conversations are never moved to public channels.

🤝Hold to standards

Every specialist is verified and approved before they can support anyone. Care is governed, supervised, and accountable.

🌐Speak your language

Chat and sessions in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Tamil and more — with live translation so language is never a barrier.

Why this exists

Trauma after an aviation accident is long-term

A disaster like AI171 sends shockwaves far beyond the aircraft. The grief, the unanswered questions, and the images stay with people for years. Recovery is rarely linear — and support that disappears after a few weeks leaves people alone exactly when delayed grief and trauma tend to surface.

Bereaved families

Sudden, traumatic loss with public attention and legal processes can complicate grief for years.

Survivor & witnesses

Survivor guilt, flashbacks and acute stress need specialist trauma care and patience, not pressure.

First responders

Rescue, recovery and medical teams carry what they saw. Cumulative exposure raises the risk of PTSD and burnout.

A quiet shelf

Self-help & resources

Gentle, evidence-informed reading for difficult days. None of this replaces talking to someone — it sits alongside it.

Grief has no timetable

Waves of sorrow, numbness, anger and guilt are all normal. There is no “right” way or schedule to grieve. Be as gentle with yourself as you would be with a friend.

When images won’t leave

Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and disturbed sleep are common after trauma. Grounding — naming five things you can see, four you can hear — can ease a moment of panic. If they persist, a specialist can help.

Small anchors each day

Water, food, a short walk, daylight, one message to one person. When everything feels heavy, the smallest routines hold you steady.

Supporting a grieving person

You don’t need the right words. Showing up, listening without fixing, and remembering the person who died by name are often what help most.

When to reach for more help

If you feel unsafe, can’t function for weeks, or thoughts of harming yourself appear — please reach out today. Use the helplines above, or book a session here.

A note on remembrance. This programme is run by the Safety Matters Foundation as an independent, not-for-profit service. It does not replace emergency care, medical treatment, or official channels — it sits alongside them, offering a steady, human place to be heard.
